About Face-in-Frame World

Invented in the 1870’s, face-in-hole boards are playful photo boards with a painted or printed scene and one or more openings to place your face. They can turn people into superheroes, animals or any character from the imagination — creating a simple, funny souvenir photo. You’ll often find them at tourist attractions, museums, playgrounds or other popular places.

These boards are more than just a bit of fun. They become little snapshots of a place and a moment: you, standing in the same frame as countless visitors before you. Face-In-Frame World is about discovering these quirky photo spots around the world, sharing where they are, and celebrating the memories they create.

The idea for Face-in-Frame World started with a simple, fun challenge: whenever we came across a face-in-hole board during our travels, we would stop and take a photo of ourselves in it. What began as a bit of holiday fun gradually turned into a growing collection of dozens of pictures from different places around the world. But finding these boards was always a matter of chance — you usually had to stumble across one to know it was there.

That got me thinking: wouldn’t it be fun to have a place where people could discover these boards, share the ones they’ve found, and help others locate them? And so Face-in-Frame World was born — a growing, shared library of these quirky photo spots, created by travellers for travellers.
